Energy Saving Tips

Seasonal & System Settings

  • Heating & Cooling: Keep heat at 68°F in the winter and air conditioning at 78°F in the summer. Close drapes/shades during hot summer days. Open windows during cool Wyoming nights to naturally flush out heat.
  • Water Heating: Lower your water heater thermostat to 120°F. Check for hidden hot water leaks—a constant drip can waste hundreds of dollars annually.

Appliances & Electronics

  • Kitchen & Cooking: Cooking, lighting, and appliances make up 33% of your bill. Use microwaves, toaster ovens, or slow cookers to use up to 75% less energy than a conventional oven. In the summer, cook on outdoor gas grills to prevent forcing your refrigerator and A/C to work overtime.
  • Refrigerators & Freezers: Clean the outside coils regularly so the compressor runs efficiently. Ensure door seals fit tightly. Avoid setting your refrigerator below 37°F or freezers below 0°F to curb unnecessary draws.
  • Laundry & Dryers: Wash clothes with cold water using modern cold-water detergents. Clean your dryer's lint filter before every cycle, and avoid over-drying clothes.

DIY Insulation & Infrastructure

  • Duct Work Insulation: Wasting 20–30% of your climate control through uninsulated ducts? Wrapping your ductwork is an easy, low-carpentry weekend project that guarantees immediate bill reduction.
  • Air Sealing: Lock windows tightly, maintain pristine weather-stripping around doors, and use foam or caulk to seal around pipe penetrations passing through exterior walls.
  • Phantom Loads: Eliminate "vampire power" by plugging electronics into advanced power strips with a hard "off" switch. This eliminates up to 90% of standby energy loss.
